Chipotle‘s Chili Lime Chips went on nationwide sale on 4 September, converting a customer-driven workaround into an official limited-time menu addition. The chain says social conversation around the habit of pairing packaged seasoned chips with Chipotle orders has grown by more than 1,500 per cent since 2022, with posts on Instagram and TikTok accumulating almost 100 million engagements.
From Fan Habit to Chipotle Chili Lime Chips
The product had a soft launch through Chipotle’s Rewards programme before opening to all customers. The premise is straightforward: the chain’s standard tortilla chips, seasoned with chili and real lime. Chief Brand Officer Fernando Machado described the development process in the launch statement. ‘We saw guests hacking their Chipotle orders with packaged chips and asked ourselves: What would this look like done the Chipotle way?’ he said, adding that the chips are made ‘without artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.’
The trend Machado references has been building steadily on social media since 2022, with customers filming themselves tipping bags of shop-bought flavoured crisps into their bowls and burritos. The volume of that content, by Chipotle’s own count, has reached a scale the chain felt justified a formal response. Whether that response lands as intended is, based on early feedback, an open question.
Mixed Reviews From Early Customers
Online reactions since the 4 September rollout have been divided. One customer wrote that they ‘didn’t really get a lot of the flavor,’ wondering whether they had received a poorly seasoned batch, while another reported the opposite experience entirely: ‘I think I got yours because mine were LOADED.’ The inconsistency in seasoning coverage appears to be the dominant complaint thread in early responses.
Not all reviews were measured. One customer compared the taste directly to Takis, and several others framed the launch as a long-overdue improvement on Chipotle’s standard tortilla chips, with one writing, ‘Finally the tortilla chips might be worth buying and not tasting stale.’ The Chili Lime Chips are available for a limited time, and the chain has not announced how long they will remain on the menu.
Pollo Asado Returns and Honey Chicken Calls Grow Louder
The chip launch is not the only menu development drawing attention right now. Pollo Asado returned on 31 August with a revised recipe, now featuring grilled adobo chicken with garlic, Mexican spices, cilantro, citrus, and lime. Its reappearance promptly reignited a separate campaign among the customer base.
Comments across social platforms have filled with calls for Chipotle to bring back Honey Chicken. One post directly connected the two new items: ‘imagine these with the hot honey chicken,’ referring to the Chili Lime Chips, before adding a plea for the product’s return. Another went further, writing, ‘I will go to chipotle every week if you bring back honey chicken.’ The pattern is not lost on the brand: the Chili Lime Chips themselves began as a customer behaviour Chipotle chose to formalise, which gives the Honey Chicken campaigners at least a precedent to point to.
Machado’s team is clearly watching what customers do with the menu, not just what they say. The question now is whether the Chili Lime Chips sustain their momentum through the limited-time window, or whether inconsistent seasoning across batches blunts the launch’s early enthusiasm.
