A brown sugar wheat recall covering eight US states has drawn in close to two million pounds of product, with the FDA posting its Class II classification on 21 September, weeks after the recall was first initiated. The affected products were sold under the United, Good & Gather, and Crystal Sugar brand names, appearing on shelves at Target and other major retailers across Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
What Triggered the Brown Sugar Wheat Recall
The recall centres on potential contamination with wheat kernels. Wheat is one of the nine major food allergens, and any exposure carries risk for consumers with wheat allergies or sensitivities. The FDA’s Class II designation means that while exposure could cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, the chance of serious adverse consequences is remote.
According to Baller Alert, Minnesota-based United Sugar Producers and Refiners initiated the recall in August. The FDA then posted and formally classified it on 21 September. That gap between initiation and classification means affected bags may still be sitting in consumer pantries or commercial storage.
The company says it supplies about a quarter of all sugar used in the United States, selling to both retail stores and food manufacturers. That scale helps explain the breadth of the recall and the range of brand names involved.
Products Included and Batch Codes to Check
The recall covers both consumer-sized and commercial-sized packaging. Approximately 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar are included, alongside about 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar, bringing the combined total to close to two million pounds.
The specific products affected are: United Light Brown Sugar in 50-pound bags (Item Number 810051); Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar in 2-pound bags (Item Number 817773, UPC 0 85239-08454 0); United 6X Powdered Sugar in 50-pound bags (Item Number 810087, UPC 7 85921-07090 4); Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar in 25-pound bags (Item Number 810097, UPC 0 70090-08090 9); and Good & Gather Powdered Sugar in 2-pound bags (Item Number 817774, UPC 0 85239-08455 7).
Consumers should check packaging for the following batch codes: MHD26223, MHD26224, MHD26225, MHD26226, MHD26227, MHD26228, MHD26229, and MHD26230. Any product carrying one of these codes falls within the recall regardless of brand name or pack size.
What to Do If You Have Recalled Products
The FDA advises consumers to return any affected sugar to the place of purchase for a full refund, or to dispose of it immediately. Keeping the product in a household with anyone who has a wheat allergy or sensitivity is not advisable, even given the remote probability of serious harm.
The Good & Gather range is a Target own-brand line, which accounts for some of the consumer exposure in the eight affected states. The United and Crystal Sugar branded products, sold in both retail and commercial volumes, widen the potential reach considerably given the supplier’s stated share of the US sugar market.
Anyone uncertain whether their product is included should cross-reference the item numbers and batch codes above before consuming or using the sugar in cooking or baking. The FDA’s formal classification on 21 September marks the point at which the recall becomes publicly indexed, meaning consumers who missed the August initiation are only now being reached by official channels.
