The Popeyes Classic Chicken Sandwich has come out on top of a ten-chain ranking that assessed fast food chicken sandwiches on flavour, juiciness, crunch, and overall balance. Ranked by Steven Morea, the exercise placed Popeyes above Dave’s Hot Chicken in second and Chick-fil-A in third, with Burger King finishing last.
How the ranking worked
Morea ordered each restaurant’s original or classic chicken sandwich and judged every entry against four criteria: the juiciness of the chicken, the integrity of its crispy coating, the presence of a crunchy or refreshing element to cut through richness, and the meat-to-sauce-to-bun ratio. Sandwiches that leaned too heavily on any single component (too much mayo, too much breading, too much bun) were penalised accordingly.
At the bottom of the table, Burger King’s Original Chicken Sandwich was criticised for a processed texture and an excess of mayo that, in Morea’s words, made it taste more like a mayo sandwich with a hint of chicken. Wendy’s Classic Chicken Sandwich placed ninth, described as inoffensive but flat, its seasoning muted and its tomato topping adding little. McDonald’s McCrispy ranked eighth; despite solid chicken flavour, a notably dry fillet became increasingly difficult to ignore across successive bites.
Raising Cane’s Chicken Sandwich, built on three chicken fingers rather than a single fillet, placed seventh. The chicken was juicy and the chain’s sauce delivered creamy, peppery flavour, but the combined weight of thick sauce, bun, and three tenders made the sandwich feel heavy. Shake Shack’s Chicken Shack came sixth: the chicken itself was among the juiciest in the ranking, yet excessively thick, oil-absorbing breading dragged each bite down.
The top five and where Popeyes Classic Chicken Sandwich stood out
KFC‘s Classic Chicken Sandwich ranked fifth, praised for its juicy chicken and near-perfect fillet-to-bun-to-mayo ratio. The only criticism: the flavour of the chicken itself did not quite match the brand’s reputation for seasoning. Jollibee’s Original Chicken Sandwich placed fourth, and had the ranking been decided on juiciness alone it would have been a serious contender for first. The chicken was described as incredibly tender and moist, its breading providing enough crunch to contrast with the soft interior.
Chick-fil-A‘s Original Chicken Sandwich took third. Its seasoning and brine produced a savory, slightly tangy flavour that Morea called immediately recognisable, and the chicken stayed juicy beneath a crisp coating. The pickles added acidity and crunch. The reservation was straightforward: almost every other sandwich in the ranking carries some form of sauce, and Chick-fil-A’s original version felt bare by comparison.
Dave’s Hot Chicken’s Slider finished second. The fillet was described as among the juiciest in the entire ranking, the crispy coating delivering texture throughout. A creamy kale slaw added a refreshing crunch beyond the pickle and helped lighten an otherwise rich sandwich, while Dave’s Sauce provided a creamy, tangy element that tied the components together. Morea’s only structural note was that the potato bun ran slightly small relative to the fillet.
The Popeyes Classic Chicken Sandwich took first place. Morea acknowledged the chicken was slightly dry in spots, but the seasoning was compelling enough to keep him coming back. The breading carries crunch and savory flavour; the mayo adds tang that prevents the sandwich from tasting too dry; the pickles bring brightness and a crisp bite. Crucially, the bun was judged the best-proportioned in the entire ranking, soft without overwhelming the chicken, so that every bite delivers the right balance of meat, sauce, pickle, and bread. No single element dominated.
According to Popeyes News, the sandwich launched on 12 August 2019, and the demand it generated quickly became a cultural moment in the fast food industry. Years on, Morea’s conclusion is that the sandwich still justifies the attention: everything works together better than any other option in the ranking, and that coherence, rather than any individual outstanding quality, is what puts Popeyes at the top.
